As many Australian researchers are all to aware, the original returns for the various Federal census' were destroyed. Only the aggregated data was retained.
However, in New South Wales, the State based, pre-Federation census returns do survive. While they don't provide the comprehensive information one finds in the various UK records, they do provide some insight into the population of Stockton.
